Finding Smallest Witnesses for Conjunctive Queries

Authors: Xiao Hu and Stavros Sintos

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 290, 27th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2024)

Abstract
A witness is a sub-database that preserves the query results of the original database but of much smaller size. It has wide applications in query rewriting and debugging, query explanation, IoT analytics, multi-layer network routing, etc. In this paper, we study the smallest witness problem (SWP) for the class of conjunctive queries (CQs) without self-joins. We first establish the dichotomy that SWP for a CQ can be computed in polynomial time if and only if it has head-cluster property, unless P = NP. We next turn to the approximated version by relaxing the size of a witness from being minimum. We surprisingly find that the head-domination property - that has been identified for the deletion propagation problem [Kimelfeld et al., 2012] - can also precisely capture the hardness of the approximated smallest witness problem. In polynomial time, SWP for any CQ with head-domination property can be approximated within a constant factor, while SWP for any CQ without such a property cannot be approximated within a logarithmic factor, unless P = NP. We further explore efficient approximation algorithms for CQs without head-domination property: (1) we show a trivial algorithm which achieves a polynomially large approximation ratio for general CQs; (2) for any CQ with only one non-output attribute, such as star CQs, we show a greedy algorithm with a logarithmic approximation ratio; (3) for line CQs, which contain at least two non-output attributes, we relate SWP problem to the directed steiner forest problem, whose algorithms can be applied to line CQs directly. Meanwhile, we establish a much higher lower bound, exponentially larger than the logarithmic lower bound obtained above. It remains open to close the gap between the lower and upper bound of the approximated SWP for CQs without head-domination property.

Dynamic Enumeration of Similarity Joins

Authors: Pankaj K. Agarwal, Xiao Hu, Stavros Sintos, and Jun Yang

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 198, 48th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2021)

Abstract
This paper considers enumerating answers to similarity-join queries under dynamic updates: Given two sets of n points A,B in ℝ^d, a metric ϕ(⋅), and a distance threshold r > 0, report all pairs of points (a, b) ∈ A × B with ϕ(a,b) ≤ r. Our goal is to store A,B into a dynamic data structure that, whenever asked, can enumerate all result pairs with worst-case delay guarantee, i.e., the time between enumerating two consecutive pairs is bounded. Furthermore, the data structure can be efficiently updated when a point is inserted into or deleted from A or B. We propose several efficient data structures for answering similarity-join queries in low dimension. For exact enumeration of similarity join, we present near-linear-size data structures for 𝓁₁, 𝓁_∞ metrics with log^{O(1)} n update time and delay. We show that such a data structure is not feasible for the 𝓁₂ metric for d ≥ 4. For approximate enumeration of similarity join, where the distance threshold is a soft constraint, we obtain a unified linear-size data structure for 𝓁_p metric, with log^{O(1)} n delay and update time. In high dimensions, we present an efficient data structure with worst-case delay-guarantee using locality sensitive hashing (LSH).

Enumeration Algorithms for Conjunctive Queries with Projection

Authors: Shaleen Deep, Xiao Hu, and Paraschos Koutris

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 186, 24th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2021)

Abstract
We investigate the enumeration of query results for an important subset of CQs with projections, namely star and path queries. The task is to design data structures and algorithms that allow for efficient enumeration with delay guarantees after a preprocessing phase. Our main contribution is a series of results based on the idea of interleaving precomputed output with further join processing to maintain delay guarantees, which maybe of independent interest. In particular, we design combinatorial algorithms that provide instance-specific delay guarantees in linear preprocessing time. These algorithms improve upon the currently best known results. Further, we show how existing results can be improved upon by using fast matrix multiplication. We also present {new} results involving tradeoff between preprocessing time and delay guarantees for enumeration of path queries that contain projections. CQs with projection where the join attribute is projected away is equivalent to boolean matrix multiplication. Our results can therefore be also interpreted as sparse, output-sensitive matrix multiplication with delay guarantees.

Reliable Dynamic Packet Scheduling over Lossy Real-Time Wireless Networks

Authors: Tao Gong, Tianyu Zhang, Xiaobo Sharon Hu, Qingxu Deng, Michael Lemmon, and Song Han

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 133, 31st Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS 2019)

Abstract
Along with the rapid development and deployment of real-time wireless network (RTWN) technologies in a wide range of applications, effective packet scheduling algorithms have been playing a critical role in RTWNs for achieving desired Quality of Service (QoS) for real-time sensing and control, especially in the presence of unexpected disturbances. Most existing solutions in the literature focus either on static or dynamic schedule construction to meet the desired QoS requirements, but have a common assumption that all wireless links are reliable. Although this assumption simplifies the algorithm design and analysis, it is not realistic in real-life settings. To address this drawback, this paper introduces a novel reliable dynamic packet scheduling framework, called RD-PaS. RD-PaS can not only construct static schedules to meet both the timing and reliability requirements of end-to-end packet transmissions in RTWNs for a given periodic network traffic pattern, but also construct new schedules rapidly to handle abruptly increased network traffic induced by unexpected disturbances while minimizing the impact on existing network flows. The functional correctness of the RD-PaS framework has been validated through its implementation and deployment on a real-life RTWN testbed. Extensive simulation-based experiments have also been performed to evaluate the effectiveness of RD-PaS, especially in large-scale network settings.

On The I/O Complexity of Dynamic Distinct Counting

Authors: Xiaocheng Hu, Yufei Tao, Yi Yang, Shengyu Zhang, and Shuigeng Zhou

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 31, 18th International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2015)

Abstract
In dynamic distinct counting, we want to maintain a multi-set S of integers under insertions to answer efficiently the query: how many distinct elements are there in S? In external memory, the problem admits two standard solutions. The first one maintains $S$ in a hash structure, so that the distinct count can be incrementally updated after each insertion using O(1) expected I/Os. A query is answered for free. The second one stores S in a linked list, and thus supports an insertion in O(1/B) amortized I/Os. A query can be answered in O(N/B log_{M/B} (N/B)) I/Os by sorting, where N=|S|, B is the block size, and M is the memory size. In this paper, we show that the above two naive solutions are already optimal within a polylog factor. Specifically, for any Las Vegas structure using N^{O(1)} blocks, if its expected amortized insertion cost is o(1/log B}), then it must incur Omega(N/(B log B)) expected I/Os answering a query in the worst case, under the (realistic) condition that N is a polynomial of B. This means that the problem is repugnant to update buffering: the query cost jumps from 0 dramatically to almost linearity as soon as the insertion cost drops slightly below Omega(1).

GeoQAMap - Geographic Question Answering with Maps Leveraging LLM and Open Knowledge Base (Short Paper)

Authors: Yu Feng, Linfang Ding, and Guohui Xiao

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 277, 12th International Conference on Geographic Information Science (GIScience 2023)

Abstract
GeoQA (Geographic Question Answering) is an emerging research field in GIScience, aimed at answering geographic questions in natural language. However, developing systems that seamlessly integrate structured geospatial data with unstructured natural language queries remains challenging. Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have facilitated the application of natural language processing in various tasks. To achieve this goal, this study introduces GeoQAMap, a system that first translates natural language questions into SPARQL queries, then retrieves geospatial information from Wikidata, and finally generates interactive maps as visual answers. The system exhibits great potential for integration with other geospatial data sources such as OpenStreetMap and CityGML, enabling complicated geographic question answering involving further spatial operations.

Two-Dimensional Rule Language for Querying Sensor Log Data: A Framework and Use Cases

Abstract
Motivated by two industrial use cases that involve detecting events of interest in (asynchronous) time series from sensors in manufacturing rigs and gas turbines, we design an expressive rule language DslD equipped with interval aggregate functions (such as weighted average over a time interval), Allen’s interval relations and various metric constructs. We demonstrate how to model events in the uses cases in terms of DslD programs. We show that answering DslD queries in our use cases can be reduced to evaluating SQL queries. Our experiments with the use cases, carried out on the Apache Spark system, show that such SQL queries scale well on large real-world datasets.

Expressivity and Complexity of MongoDB Queries

Authors: Elena Botoeva, Diego Calvanese, Benjamin Cogrel, and Guohui Xiao

Published in: LIPIcs, Volume 98, 21st International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT 2018)

Abstract
In this paper, we consider MongoDB, a widely adopted but not formally understood database system managing JSON documents and equipped with a powerful query mechanism, called the aggregation framework. We provide a clean formal abstraction of this query language, which we call MQuery. We study the expressivity of MQuery, showing the equivalence of its well-typed fragment with nested relational algebra. We further investigate the computational complexity of significant fragments of it, obtaining several (tight) bounds in combined complexity, which range from LogSpace to alternating exponential-time with a polynomial number of alternations.
